This one were a bit different. Our Linda came home Tuesday and said she'd seen a shoe in a puddle near the trolleys at Morrisons in Brighouse. She weren't sure if it counted — "it's not on a moor, Keith" — but I said a shoe's a shoe, and I'd have a look.
Drove over Thursday morning. Took me flask and sandwiches just in case — egg and cress, a good classic. Our Linda said I were daft taking a picnic to a supermarket car park but she'd wrapped them up nice anyway.
Found the puddle easy enough. Big one, near the recycling bins where the tarmac dips. And there it were. Left trainer, grey, size 6 or 7. Sitting in about two inches of water, laces still done up. The sole were starting to come away at the toe. Been there a few days I'd say, judging by the waterline on the fabric.
Bit of a question about what to do. I don't usually interfere, but leaving it int' water felt wrong somehow. Fished it out in the end. Set it on the low wall by the bins so it could dry out proper. Hope that were the right call. I've thought about it since.
Had me sandwiches on a bench near the entrance. Got a few looks but nowt were said. Watched a magpie for a bit. Two actually — they were having a disagreement about summat near the bottle bank.
Not the most scenic location I've documented, I'll be honest. But there were summat about it. A shoe in a puddle in a car park — you wonder how it ended up there. I don't draw conclusions. I just note what I see.
Our Linda asked how it went when I got home. I said it were a good shoe, overall. She said "that's nice love" and put the kettle on.
Aye. A good morning.
